Erica Scrivner is the Director of Bands and Music Technology at Carl Hayden Community High School and the Director of Phoenix Union Indoor Percussion. Erica Scrivner is returning as the Performing Arts Instructional Leader for the 18-19 school year and participates in several campus committees as well as district curriculum-writing teams. Miss Erica received her National Board Certification in December of 2017.
After receiving her Master of Music: Music Education degree from Arizona State University, Erica taught elementary general music and elementary band in the Mesa Public Schools District before pursuing a career at the secondary level. As a trumpet player, her primary educational medium is high school band. Miss Erica has spent nine years teaching high school marching band, winter drumline, and winterguard. For many of those years she has worked alongside her husband, Joel Scrivner, as both share a passion for teaching music in the high school setting. Joel currently assists the percussionists at Carl Hayden as a volunteer instructor and the husband-wife team work together to arrange customized music and write custom drill for the Falcon marching programs in both fall and winter seasons.
As a performer, Erica Scrivner has played in a variety of community ensembles including the Wildwood Community Jazz Band, Danville Community Band and Reno Municipal Band. Throughout her undergraduate at the University of Nevada, Reno she enjoyed a wide variety of performance opportunities including wind bands, musicals, choir, pep band, and marching ensembles. Miss Erica spent six years as a member of DCI drum and bugle corps including the Santa Clara Vanguard and the Concord Blue Devils, as well as two years marching with WGI Independent A class finalist, eNVision Percussion Theatre.
Matt Vezey is the Associate Director of Bands at Carl Hayden. Mr. Vezey co-directs the Marching Band, Symphonic Band, and Concert Band as well as directing the jazz program and musical pit-orchestra. Matt Vezey discovered his passion for music when he began playing the trombone in his middle school band. Despite initially learning how to play the trombone backwards (a small setback which was quickly fixed by his band director at the time) Mr. Vezey continued to pursue his passion for music! Throughout his high school career, Mr. Vezey performed in several regional and all-state ensembles as well as two nationally recognized ensembles: the Bands of America Honor Band and the U.S. Army All American Marching Band.
Mr. Vezey earned a Bachelor of Music Degree (Magna Cum Laude) in Instrumental Music Education from Arizona State University. While at ASU Mr. Vezey studied trombone with Ralph Sauer and Douglas Yeo. Mr. Vezey is a member of the National Association for Music Education, Arizona Band and Orchestra Directors Association, and is an alumnus of the national honorary band fraternity, Kappa Kappa Psi.
As a freelance trombonist, Mr. Vezey has performed throughout the valley with groups such as the Chandler Symphony Orchestra, ProMusica Arizona, Arizona Broadway Theatre, and local chamber ensembles, big bands, and latin dance bands. Mr. Vezey is passionate about music and teaching. He believes that through diligent practice, creativity, fellowship, and hard work students who study music benefit tremendously from the countless rewards that music has to offer.
